GPA STATEMENT: Imperial Sugar Refinery Fire

Savannah, GA – February 8, 2008 – The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) Garden City Terminal just north of Savannah, GA was not impacted by the explosion and fire that occurred at the Imperial Sugar Refinery last night at approximately 7:15 PM.
GPA staff provided assistance to various emergency response groups throughout the night. GPA Port Police coordinated efforts to help family members, direct traffic and support those leading the rescue efforts.
This morning, GPA is staging a blood drive to help replenish the local blood supplies in the wake of the explosion at the sugar refinery.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the injured, the missing, their family members and the entire Imperial Sugar community.
Once again, terminal operations suffered no negative impacts and the Garden City Terminal remains open for business.
