The Technical Infrastructure

For the pilot program, Shanghai and Savannah have mounted e-tag readers on quay cranes to handle vessel load and discharge and at terminal gates to handle inbound/outbound container moves. E-tags “report” when they pass within approximately 100 feet of an e-tag reader. PC servers located in Savannah and Shanghai listen for e-tag messages and relay the information, location, and status to a website during pilot testing. The website, http://www.container-rfid.net, supports queries on containers, vessels, and voyages to monitor containers in transit.
